Week 2 in Chile! -Hollyn

We had a long weekend this weekend, so I traveled with my host family! We went to Cauquenes and visited grandparents who also own a beautiful farm and vineyard. I really enjoyed seeing the many plants and animals and playing with my host siblings. My favorite part may have been picking membrillo straight off the tree and eating them (and using them to play catch, like in the picture). Later in the weekend, we returned to the farm and fished in the pond pictured above. I learned to cast a line and actually caught several fish!

Tuvimos un fin de semana largo este fin de semana, ¡así que viajé con mi familia anfitriona! Fuimos a Cauquenes y visitamos a los abuelos que también poseen una hermosa granja y viñedo. Realmente disfruté de ver muchas plantas y animales y jugar con mis hermanos anfitriones. Mi parte favorita fue recoger membrillo directamente del árbol y comérselos (y usarlos para jugar a atrapar, como en la imagen). Más tarde en el fin de semana, volvimos a la granja y pescamos en el estanque en la foto de arriba. ¡Aprendí a lanzar una línea y de hecho atrapé varios peces!

The next day, we traveled to the beach town of Pelluhue. I had never seen a rocky coastline like this one. It was truly breathtaking. My host siblings and I had fun climbing all the rocks and running from the freezing cold waves! I wish my photos could really capture the awesome beauty of this place. The water was pretty choppy and often crashed against the rocks, but my host family said that it is much milder in the summer and a great swimming spot once it warms up.

Al día siguiente, viajamos a la ciudad costera de Pelluhue. Nunca había visto una costa rocosa como esta. Fue realmente impresionante. ¡Mis hermanos anfitriones y yo nos divertimos escalando todas las rocas y huyendo de las olas heladas! Deseo que mis fotos realmente puedan capturar la increíble belleza de este lugar. El agua estaba bastante agitada y a menudo se estrelló contra las rocas, pero mi familia de acogida dijo que es mucho más suave en el verano y un gran lugar para nadar una vez que se calienta.

In Pelluhue, I had the opportunity to ride a horse along the beach! This was a brand new experience for me and very fun! I got some beautiful views of the sun on the water and enjoyed this unique experience. We also walked around the market near the beach, which reminded me a lot of the touristy shops near beaches in the US. They were selling handmade jackets made from alpaca hair, though, which was a little different than any US tourist shop! I'm so thankful that my host family continues to show me new parts of Chile and allows me to have new experiences. It was an incredible weekend!

¡En Pelluhue, tuve la oportunidad de montar a caballo por la playa! ¡Esta fue una nueva experiencia para mí y muy divertida! Obtuve algunas hermosas vistas del sol sobre el agua y disfruté de esta experiencia única. También caminamos por el mercado cerca de la playa, lo que me recordó muchas de las tiendas turísticas cerca de las playas en los Estados Unidos. Sin embargo, vendían chaquetas hechas a mano hechas de pelo de alpaca, que era un poco diferente a cualquier tienda de turismo de los Estados Unidos. Estoy tan agradecida de que mi familia de acogida me siga mostrando nuevas partes de Chile y me permite tener nuevas experiencias. ¡Fue un fin de semana increíble!

Yesterday, the LSU group visited an under-ocean mine. The experience itself reminded me a lot of the cave tours I have done in Virginia. What really fascinated me was the history of the mine. Our tour guide was a former miner who had worked at that mine for 20 years before it closed. He told us about the horrific working conditions such as child labor, lack of food and water, and of course the safety concerns like breathing in contaminated air. And for all of that, until 1904 the miners were paid in tokens that could only be redeemed at the mine's store (the miners all lived on site in cramped apartments). Yet our guide did seem to have a pride for his work, and explained to us that the coal they mined there powered Chile to move forward in industry. It was an extremely interesting experience. Because the mine was under-ocean, it was obviously very close to the coast. We got some beautiful views of the ocean and beach once we emerged from underground.

I have had too many wonderful new experiences to pack them all into just one post, but these have been a few highlights from my week. I am looking forward to the days ahead!

Ayer, el grupo LSU visitó una mina submarina. La experiencia misma me recordó muchas de las visitas a las cuevas que hice en Virginia. Lo que realmente me fascinó fue la historia de la mina. Nuestro guía turístico era un ex minero que había trabajado en esa mina durante 20 años antes de que cerrara. Nos contó sobre las horrendas condiciones de trabajo, como el trabajo infantil, la falta de comida y agua y, por supuesto, las preocupaciones de seguridad, como inhalar aire contaminado. Y a pesar de todo eso, hasta 1904 los mineros recibieron pagos en fichas que solo podían canjearse en la tienda de la mina (todos los mineros vivían en el lugar en apartamentos estrechos). Sin embargo, nuestra guía parecía estar orgullosa de su trabajo y nos explicó que el carbón que extraían allí impulsaba a Chile a avanzar en la industria. Fue una experiencia extremadamente interesante. Debido a que la mina estaba bajo el océano, obviamente estaba muy cerca de la costa. Obtuvimos algunas hermosas vistas del océano y la playa una vez que salimos del subsuelo.


He tenido demasiadas nuevas experiencias maravillosas para empacarlas todas en una sola publicación, pero estas han sido algunas de las más destacadas de mi semana. ¡Estoy deseando que lleguen los días venideros!
