Week 1 in Chile! - Hollyn

I am so excited to be here in Chile! My host family is absolutely fantastic. They have been so welcoming and so kind. I couldn't have asked for a better fit. We have great conversation and I am learning a ton from them. They are my guides to Chilean life and I am so glad I have them! They have also introduced me to many new foods and I have loved them all. I may have to upload a separate post at some point, because if I included it all here this post would be way too long!

¡Estoy muy emocionado de estar aquí en Chile! Mi familia de acogida es absolutamente fantástica. Han sido muy acogedores y amables. No podría haber pedido un mejor recivimiento. Tenemos una gran conversación y estoy aprendiendo mucho de ellos. Ellos son mis guías para la vida chilena y estoy muy contento de tenerlos. También me han presentado muchos alimentos nuevos y los he amado a todos. Puede que tenga que subir una publicación separada en algún momento dedicada solo a la comida, porque si la incluyese aquí, ¡esta publicación sería demasiado larga!

 
My family took me to see some of the sights around our area during my first few days here. It is so beautiful here! We went to a really nice park and lake, and then later to the seaside where we walked along the beach and a through a small marketplace. My family has been teaching me all about the history of Chile and making sure I see all the important spots. I really have wonderful tour guides!

Mi familia me llevó a ver algunos de los lugares de interés de nuestra zona durante mis primeros días aquí. ¡Es tan hermoso aquí! Fuimos a un parque y lago muy bonitos, y luego a la orilla del mar, donde caminamos por la playa y atravesamos un pequeño mercado. Mi familia me ha estado enseñando sobre la historia de Chile y asegurándome de ver todos los lugares importantes. ¡Realmente tengo maravillosas guías turísticas!
 
I am teaching music with my cooperating teacher, Profesor Christian, at both the "big" and "little" schools (elementary and middle/high). He is very patient with my limited Spanish, which I am very grateful for! I love his positive and steady approach to teaching, and I am so glad I am paired with a teacher who is setting such a great example for me. We have shared many laughs over our "language barrier", but we have managed ok! I am looking forward to working with him more in the coming weeks.

Estoy enseñando música con mi maestro colaborador, Profesor Christian, en las escuelas "grande" y "pequeña" (primaria y secundaria / secundaria). Él es muy paciente con mi español limitado, ¡por lo que estoy muy agradecida! Me encanta su enfoque positivo y constante de la enseñanza, y estoy muy contenta de estar emparejada con un maestro que está dando un gran ejemplo para mí. Hemos compartido muchas risas sobre nuestra "barrera del idioma", pero lo hemos logrado bien. Tengo muchas ganas de trabajar más con él  en las próximas semanas.
 
Music education looks very different here. In the "big school", most classes are general music classes that teach students about music history and expose them to varying genres and music topics. There are also classes where students sing karaoke-style to songs they choose, or classes where students play pop/rock songs they know (where every student can play every instrument- guitar, drumset, bass, piano). In the "little school", things look slightly more familiar. Students learn songs on xylophone, melodica, or ukulele. Overall, the classroom here is much more free. Students are allowed to make their own choices and are generally not controlled by the teacher. This sometimes leads to a bit of chaos, especially with the younger students, but it also allows for the students to have fun, express themselves, and be independent.

I can't believe I've only been here for a week! I've learned so much in such little time. I am so excited for the weeks to come!

La educación musical se ve muy diferente aquí. En la "escuela grande", la mayoría de las clases son clases generales de música que enseñan a los estudiantes sobre la historia de la música y los exponen a diferentes géneros y temas musicales. También hay clases donde los estudiantes cantan al estilo de karaoke a las canciones que eligen, o clases donde los estudiantes tocan canciones de pop / rock que conocen (donde cada estudiante puede tocar cada instrumento, guitarra, batería, bajo, piano). En la "pequeña escuela", las cosas se ven un poco más familiares. Los estudiantes aprenden canciones en xilófono, melódica o ukelele. En general, el aula aquí es mucho más libre. Los estudiantes pueden tomar sus propias decisiones y generalmente no están controlados por el maestro. Esto a veces lleva a un poco de caos, especialmente con los estudiantes más jóvenes, pero también les permite a los estudiantes divertirse, expresarse y ser independientes.



¡No puedo creer que solo he estado aquí por una semana! He aprendido mucho en tan poco tiempo. ¡Estoy muy emocionada por las próximas semanas!
